Cast vs Calendered Vinyl for Vehicle Decals

Cast and calendered vinyl can look the same on a roll, but on a truck or car they behave very differently. Here is the short version so you know what you are buying.

The short answer

  • Cast vinyl is thinner and more flexible, stays where you put it, and lasts longer outdoors. It is the better choice for vehicles, curves, and the Arizona sun.
  • Calendered vinyl costs less and works well on flat surfaces and short-term jobs, but it tends to shrink back over time, especially in heat.

How each one is made

  • Calendered vinyl is made by heating PVC and rolling it out into a sheet. Stretching it that way leaves stored tension in the film, so it tends to pull back over time.
  • Cast vinyl is made by pouring liquid PVC onto a moving sheet and letting it dry. It is never stretched, so it has no built-in tension to pull back.

Why we use cast vinyl

Our sponsor decals, DOT numbers and truck lettering are cut from premium cast vinyl: ORACAL 751 in most colors, and 3M 7125 for matte black. On a truck door, edges and curves are where cheaper film tends to lift or shrink, and the sun in Arizona makes that worse.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose cast for anything on a vehicle, anything with a curve, anything you want to last for years, and anything that sits in the sun.
  • Calendered can be fine for a flat sign, a window decal, or something you only need for a season.
