USDOT Number Marking Rules for Your Truck

Who needs a USDOT number, what has to be on the truck, and how to get it on there. This is general information, not legal advice. Check FMCSA or your state before you order.

Who needs a USDOT number

Under FMCSA rules, you generally need a USDOT number if your commercial vehicle is used in interstate commerce and it:

  • has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more, or
  • is designed or used to carry more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for pay, or more than 15 passengers (including the driver) without pay, or
  • carries hazardous materials that require a safety permit.

Some states also require a USDOT number for trucks that stay inside the state. Check with your state agency.

What has to be on the truck

Under 49 CFR 390.21, the marking must show:

  • your company’s legal name or a single trade name, as listed on your FMCSA registration (Form MCS-150), and
  • your USDOT number, preceded by the letters “USDOT.”

If another company’s name is also on the vehicle, your name must be preceded by “operated by.”

Size, color and placement

  • It goes on both sides of the vehicle, usually on the doors.
  • The letters must contrast sharply with the background, such as white on dark or black on light.
  • It must be readable in daylight from 50 feet while the truck is stopped.
  • It must be kept legible. It can be painted or a removable decal.

The federal rule does not set a letter height. It only requires that the marking be readable from 50 feet. Our DOT number decals are typically about 3″ tall. Some states have their own size rules, so check with your state before you order.

What about MC numbers?

An MC number can no longer replace the USDOT number on the truck. FMCSA does not require you to remove an existing MC number, but you do not need to add it to new or repainted vehicles. For-hire carriers still need operating authority and an MC number for their paperwork.

Rented and leased trucks

For rentals or leases of 30 days or less, the lessor’s name and USDOT number can be used if the rental agreement carries the required information and stays in the truck for the whole term.

How to apply your decals

Clean the surface, apply between about 50°F and 90°F, tape a level guide line, then squeegee from the center out. See our How To’s page for the full steps.
